Identification

Send the serial number of the unit, and a photograph of its nameplate with it. The serial number is what the part is ordered against; the nameplate settles which version of the machine it belongs to, because the same number can appear on more than one.

Part numbers are welcome where you have them. The quotation states the genuine part, its origin and its lead time.

Published service intervals assume conditions this plant does not have

Published service figures for a rotary vane pump assume a reference condition: a clean, dry air stream and moderate ambient temperature. The manufacturer states the qualification directly: the 500 to 2,000 hour oil interval applies for a clean, dry air stream and an operating temperature below 100 °C. For continuous duty the figure given is approximately 1,000 hours, and shorter still in harsh conditions.

A plant at 40–45 °C in heavy dust and high humidity does not meet them. No manufacturer publishes a corrected figure for that service.

What is actually happening

Intake filter loading against ultimate vacuum

The published check interval is a range of 40 to 200 hours. The two panels show the same pump on the same duty, cleaned at each end of that range.

The cross-section

Four vanes in an eccentric rotor. The clearance opens before anything sounds wrong.

The vanes are the sacrificial component. As they shorten, the sealing line against the housing is lost, gas leaks back, and the oil runs hotter. The sequence is set out below.

Nominal. Vanes at full length. The rotor sweeps a clean crescent and the sealing line holds against the housing wall.
1 The vane is the sacrificial part. It is meant to wear.
2 As it shortens, the sealing line is lost — gas leaks back.
3 Friction rises. Oil runs hot. The housing begins to score.
